Groundwater is the major source of water in the Sana’a Basin. During the mid 1980, as a consequence of the rapid urban population growth and sharp increase in the water use by agriculture, abstractions began to exceed recharge At present the basin is experiencing a serious depletion of groundwater resources with an associated alarming degradation in water quality.
The Project aimed at increasing water resources availability in Sana’a Basin by developing aquifer recharge and storing surface runoff flow. The project included rehabilitation of existing dams, the design and construction of new dams, small check dams and surface dams.
Objectives
Using participatory approach, undertake a feasibility study for: 1)- evaluation of the operational conditions of 23 dams; 2)- rehabilitation of 8 existing dams and related structures of different types: earthfill, rockfill and gravity dams.; 3)- construction of 4 new dams;- construction of 23 check dams; 4)- construction of 3 subsurface dams.
Outputs
- Assessment of the operational conditions of 23 existing dams and their related structures (spillway and outlet structures), evaluate the rehabilitation needs, prepare the evaluation and ranking matrix and select 8 dams for the design of rehabilitation and upgrading works.
- Preliminary study for 9 potential dam sites including social study and acceptance , evaluation of geological and hydrological characteristics of the potential sites, estimate construction costs and undertake a summary EIA. Prepare evaluation matrix for the proposed sites and select 3 dam sites for new dams construction
- Engineering study and design for the rehabilitation works including geological, hydrological, geotechnical, engineering design of the rehabilitation works covering the hydraulic structure and the dam, preparation of bill of quantities , cost estimates and implementation schedule.
- Engineering study and design for the new dams including geological, hydrological geotechnical, engineering design of the hydraulic structures and the dam, preparation of bill of quantities , cost estimates and implementation schedule.
- Social survey and community development plan for O&M of the dam during the operation phase
- Prepare hydrological study including evaluation of groundwater recharge
- Prepare Monitoring and Evaluation Plan
- Prepare O&M plan
- Prepare EIA reports
- Prepare Implementation and Management Plan of the project including staffing requirements, staff qualification and job description of the proposed organizational structure.
