Spatial Planning to Support Development of Critical Areas/and Structures of Lombok - Indonesia
Background
Lombok, an island in Nusa Tenggara Barat in Indonesia, is undergoing tremendous economic expansion. The growing tourism industry competes with the agricultural sector for the island’s limited water resources. From a national perspective of water resources distribution, Lombok Island is considered to be a dry region. Since water is distributed unevenly on the island, integration of water resources development and management with social needs and economic development and is required.
Objectives
Use spatial planning methods to: i) prepare an integrated spatial plan of Lombok with the focus of directing policy development and formulating programs and strategies for sustainable economic and resources development; and ii) prepare a mid-range program for development in the Lombok river basin units.
Outputs
i) A land-use plan taking into consideration water conservation, economic, environmental and human settlement needs; ii) A development strategy for sectors dominant in economic growth.
Development programs and project formulation were described in terms of infrastructure provision and river basin protection, and a river basin unit management and development mechanism based on an integrated river basin approach was formulated. The land-use plan constitutes an input for the preparation of the provincial spatial plan, and is to be used by all sectors concerned with development of river basin territory management in Indonesia.
