Rural & Pastoral Water Supply - Senegal

Background

The northern section of Senegal comprises part of the Sahel, bordering the Sahara Desert. The rainy season lasts from July to October. Water supplies for most villages in the north, center, east and west are dependent on rainfall. Precipitation once averaged about 350 mm annually; successive years of drought have wreaked catastrophe on the agriculture-based economy and the people of Senegal. The need for potable water for human and livestock consumption is overwhelming.

Objectives

i) Prepare tender documents, manage and supervise the construction of 40 deep boreholes, 183 wells, 10 connector wells, 10 natural pond dug outs, 20 reservoirs and 10 elevated water towers, as well as 4 maintenance workshops and pumping equipment; and
2) Develop a public awareness campaign focused on water conservation.

Outputs

A team from Hydrosult provided technical and financial management of the project. The team supervised all activities. These included geological and hydrogeological studies such as field surveys, geophysical investigations and interpretation, aerial studies, water-points siting and design, pump selection and testing, design of headworks and provision of related infrastructure, and social surveys. Design and construction monitoring of reservoirs, water towers and other hydraulic structures also took place. An information campaign was conducted to raise awareness regarding the use and protection of water points, and to encourage the population to participate in the construction and maintenance of water supply works.

The project to provide drinking water to villages across the State of Senegal was funded by the Kuwaiti Funds for Arab Economic Development, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), the Arab Bank for the Economic Development of Africa (BADEA) and the Government of Senegal.

Sponsors: Kuwaiti Funds, OPEC, BADEA
